SCENTS

do you ever smell something and it instantly takes you back to a time-place-exact location?

that happened to me last night and then i had a flood of memories.
some made me want to cry others made me think of the good ol' days of being a child.

i was laying in bed rather restless...
it was 11:30 and i could not fall asleep...
i smashed my face into my pillow and took a deep breath...
i smelt a certain smell...
it instantly took me back to my grandparents "toy room" from when i was little....
the toy room was their extra bedroom...
the smell was so right there with me it was almost unreal...
i could smell the exact scent from sheets from the bed in the toy room...
the sheets were floral and i can remember exactly what they looked like...
something like this....
it made me think of my childhood...
my family was very close and we would go to my grandparents house often...
i never got to know my grandma well,
she passed away when i was 11...
she got brain cancer when i was 6...
she fought a long very hard battle.
she was only 53 when she passed.

it broke my heart last night thinking about this...
my grandma passing was so hard on my mom...
i know it affected my entire family...
i couldn't imagine losing my mom at such a young age...
i don't think anyone can...

one other scent that always hits me like a ton of bricks is fresh flowers....
whenever i smell them i'm instantly brought back to my grandma's funeral...
it was the first time i'd experienced death as a child...
it was hard on me...
i had dreams almost every night about my grandma's funeral...
i didn't like falling asleep...
my parents moved out of the state we lived in a year after my grandma passed away...
i was halfway through 7th grade...

i'll continue on my childhood another day.
it's nice to reminisce at times :)
hope everyone is having a good week so far!

*update*
my sweet mom said that smelling that scent was just my grandma saying "hi" :)
i believe that and that made me cry.
happy tears of course.

p.s. thanks for all the dress comments and guesses!
i wont tell you which one i ordered.
but i will say it was NOT #2

This made me tear up - I know exactly what you mean. I have some Christmas decorations that belonged to my Memaw and every year I pull them out of their box and will hold them up and smell them as hard as I can to find that old smoke smell (that I hated as a child). Every year it fades a little more and I am dreading the day I can no longer smell it. Good post sweet girl. And PS, my parents totally have those sheets up in a cabinet!

Cool Water: Brings me back to 9th grade and the hot 19-year-old German guy I met. Sigh. It's so molesterish because I was only 13, but still.

What a great post girl! When I lost my little man they sent me home his hospital hat and blanket and they are sealed in baggies and when I open them up they still smell just like him and it breaks my heart every time. Hope your having a great day! xoxo

What a nice post. I am sorry that you lost your Grandma at such a young age. I know what you mean about smells thought, the same thing happens to me sometimes, it is so strange!

I do this a lot with music. I will hear a song on the radio and it immediately takes me back to a certain time or reminds me a specific person. Funny how sensitive our senses can be!

I feel like that happens to me often!

I always think of my Grandma when I smell freshly bleached linens. Her bed sheets always were so crisp and smelled just like bleach. I swear this is why I only buy white towels and sheets so I can have my house smell just like hers did. XOXO

Awwww.....this makes me sad...
I am the same way. My grandma died when I was 3...my mom was only 29. I seriously cannot imagine. That would be me NOW. I wouldnt be able to go on without my mom.
My other gma died when I was in 1st grade. I rememebr the day perfectly!
I hope that my mom and MIL live for a LONG time so Blake can have them both in his life!!

I'm so anxious to see your dress choice!

I am so sorry girl, that is so sad. I sent a prayer you way.

I know what you mean about certain scents. certain songs do the same for me too. It's funny how that works. I think it is a special thing.

I am the same way... every smell is a memory for me. Whenever I bake anything I am instantly back at my parent's house, with my Mom baking us Friday afternoon cookies or Saturday morning muffins. I also love the smell of bleached towels, it reminds me of winter break when we would stay in a hotel for a week during basketball tourneys with like 6 other families and we would all go swimming in the pool!!
Thanks lovebug!!! I cannot wait to find out what dress you got.... gaaaah! Your going to be a BEAUTIFUL bride!!!!!!!

I am the same ways with smells. I cannot walk in Dillards men dept without getting teary eyed. All the cologne smells make me think of my precious father.

Have a great day!

Wow, I know exactly what you mean about certain smells bringing back memories. It happens to me all the time when I smell something familiar. That is really sad about your Grandmother, I'm sorry you lost her so young! I never really got to know my Mom's Mom either, she was mentally ill and by the time she got treatment and was "normal" she died of lung cancer. My Dad's Mom that I was always close with has Alzheimers and doesn't remember me anymore so it's like I've lost them both. Sorry this was depressing lol. It's tough to lose someone, I think everyone can identify with that. Hope you are having a good week!!

I always get reminded of the past when I smell certain things, especially perfume I used to wear. So amazing how the mind works!

No lie...i was just telling my husband last night i smelled something and it took me back to when i was a kid, a very specific moment, isn't that weird how that happens.

Sarah said...

I guess I'm weird but I don't have too many smells that I associate things with. Fire smoke and pine trees are about the only things. I wish I had beautiful memories like yours. =]
Oh, and I don't know if it's just me but for some reason your blog name reads as "header".

What a beautiful, heartbreaking post! Thinking of you, my friend!

Scents always bring back everything for me too! Often I spray a certain perfume just so I can think of my mom. It's nice to feel close to her even though she is far away. Glad you can remember your grandma and feel close to her when smelling this scent!

I cannot imagine what that must have felt like. My family is Italian and we are supremely close. In fact we moved from NY all the way to AZ to be near my grandparents after they retired! Before we moved we would call and just sob on the phone with each other. I read about other peoples experiences with losing people so close to them and I just think that my world would be shattered if I lost my mom or grandma :( It sure doesnt help that I am probably the biggest cry baby ever. It is a nice comforting thought to know that our loved ones are always around us, watching and loving! Hope you have a happy day :)

Scents do that to me all the time:)sweet and heart breaking story......sent a little prayer your way pretty girl! Have a good day!

I am brought to tears by the smell of Diva perfume. My nana wore it and she and I were so close. She died 5 years ago and rarely a day goes by without me thinking about her.

Girl, I am teary eyed! This is a wonderful post.

I agree about the smell of fresh flowers and funerals. One of my grandmothers died when I was 9, so I can relate to this scent memory.

Wonderful post hun. :) Scents can and always bring back memories for me, too. Even when I smell food or a perfume. Just wonderful but also quite sad at times. :)

Aw, that was a sweet post. I am sorry that it all makes you so sad. I hope that those smells eventually bring you happy memories.

You and I got our dress on the same day! I got mine Saturday as well. You gave us far too many options as far as which dress it is...I'm not even going to bother guessing, lol.

Scents always bring back memories for me...some good, some bad. Just the other day i smelled a perfume that my grandma used to wear. My grandma passed away when i was in college. It didn't make me sad. Instead it brought a warmth to me.

flowers can remind me on my great aunts funeral... and I smelled a perfume at GAP the other day that they brought back. I wore it in high school and smelling the perfume alone made me remember the way the hallways smelled. So weird!

Lindsey said...

Sometimes I will just be walking through a store and smell a scent that reminds me of my Grandparents or another fond childhood memory! I love it when that happens - as long as it's a good memory that is!! But there's nothing better when those sweet memories of when we were young pop in our head! ;) Cute post girlie! Have a wonderful weekend!!

It amazes me how strongly scents are connected to specific memories or places. Thankfully, there aren't any scents that bring up painful memories for me, just happy ones. I'm so sorry for your family's loss, I haven't lost anyone I was that super close to and I can't imagine what your mom and the rest of your family have had to go through.

Oh I love your new background, makes me ready for Spring :-)

Have a lovely weekend, pretty girl! XOXO

Aw, I'm sorry about your grandma, but that is super sweet about what your mom said.

My favorite smell is cinnamon. It always takes me back to thinking of childhood Christmases.
